The challenge
The Diocese of Sheffield needed to improve a cold, energy-inefficient vicarage with poor EPC performance, while respecting its heritage, internal features and the mix of stone and roughcast elevations. Conventional insulation systems would have meant stripping existing substrates and losing original details.
Our solution
CorkSol SprayCork applied externally to the rear and side roughcast elevations, and internally to the exterior walls of treated rooms with a breathable plaster skim over the top. Two-layer application, then independently verified by Build Test Solutions in March and June 2024.
Results
- U-value improved from 1.60 to 1.22 W/m²K — 24% reduction, in line with design expectation
- Air permeability reduced by 28% in the treated front room
- No removal of existing wall substrates — heritage features preserved
- Single breathable system handles both stone and roughcast elevations
